December is here, and, let’s be realistic, it has come with the bitter-sweet ups and downs of having the family home for the holidays.
These beautiful summer days will be gone sooner than we imagined. We do still have a few more productive days before we are bombarded with regrets of not having had a fruitful year. So let’s get on with rectifying our wrongs, forgetting the mishaps and forgiving those that annoyed us. Let’s rather concentrate on the future.
The holiday season brings with it a sea of happiness, sadness, could haves, would haves and should haves. Don’t despair because these are natural feelings that, if handled with care, can actually be an advantage and a lesson to do better. Maya Angelou, a renowned author, said, “I did then what I knew best… Now that I know better, I will do better.”
Be in sync with your mind, body and soul. Listen to the birds and the drone of traffic. Listen to your body and let your mind flow free. Great ideas make good designs but only courage can see them emulated on fabric. Courage is what brought many students to my door and courage made them continue. This year we have testimonials on how attitudes towards life has changed just by being in a positive environment.
As this fabulous year comes to an end and a new year approaches I feel endless possibilities of creating new designers. It is with great joy I announce that 2017 will see a remarkable number of graduates for the first time ever to leave the doors of Silent Sewing Academy. We thank the Almighty for every blessing.
The buzz is on for our Show at the Dubai Souk. Our students Fezeka (a current Beginner Level graduate), Saras (a former Intermediate Level student who did the Afrisari Show at Dubai Souk last year) and a few more surprise designers will be on show this year. Saras had a fantastic review that had the organisers of Dubai Souk requesting more Fashion Shows from us! Fezaka, an up and coming designer, is a natural. With her charisma and Saras’s new innovation we will have the entire stadium rocking on 7 January 2017 at 19:30.
A new year means new resolutions – not bucket lists! Sewing is an art. Clothes, Crafts or Crazy ideas, whatever you make begins with you wanting to do it. Pinterest, TV or live Fashion Shows have sewists just like you and me craving to try out new ideas.
A number of things have kept me motivated over the years… Past students’ own incentives and pictures of the stunning outfits they have made; the number of new students at the Academy; social recognition and a pure love for I do! These things make me want to do more, experience more and help the younger generation who are not as exposed to Sewing and Creating as the past generation since schools are no longer teaching basic needlework like they used to. I implore you to find what motivates YOU and try to make a difference to those around you!
