Sewing Skills

Learn to use your sewing machine by creating simple everyday items in this 4-day course. Each lesson is two hours.

Requirements

  • Own sewing machine
  • Own tools and materials (list available upon registration)

Cost

  • R1,200 per course (with own kit and machine)
  • Kits and machine hire may be available, please enquire.
  • Strictly cash directly to the Academy OR EFT into our designated bank account.

Shopper Bag Masterclass

In keeping with being environmentally friendly*, this season introduces a specialty class to teach how to sew fabric Shopper bags.  Wash-and-wear shopper bags and reusable gift bags make beautiful keepsakes and you may also contribute towards your household income by selling them.  Notes are supplied.

*At the Academy, we have been discarding all our waste paper into the Orange Reclycling Bags for a few years, and we encourage others to do the same.

Requirements

  • Basic sewing machine skills are essential.
  • Own sewing machine
  • Materials & Tools:
    • 2m medium-weight fabric, e.g. Gabadene, Denim, Butcher Linen, Mini-Matt, etc.  (If you’d like the lining to be of a coordinated fabric, buy 1m for lining, 1m for outer.)
    • A reel of machine thread to match your fabric
    • fabric & paper scissors
    • stationery (pencil, pen, eraser, etc.)
    • dressmaking pins
    • 1m paper for drafting
    • Please come to class with a full bobbin and your machine threaded and ready for use

Handwork courses for girls

Foundation Courses 1, 2 & 3 (Handwork classes)

A series of 4-day holiday or Saturday courses, aimed at school-going girls, which teaches basic hand-sewing skills and the creation of a variety of items.  (N.B.  Items made depend on which Course you are enrolled on).  All kits are included!

Requirements

  • Age: 7 +

Cost

  • R850 per course (kits included)
    • Level 1:  Complete sewing kit + all materials, scattered beads, buttons, etc.
    • Level 2:  Beadwork kit + all materials, stuffing, tools, etc.
    • Level 3:  Embroidery kit + Fabric painting kit + all materials, etc.
  • Strictly cash directly to the Academy OR EFT into our designated bank account.
  • No cheques, cheque deposits, cash deposits, etc. accepted due to incurred back charges. All incurred charges in this regard will be for the student’s account.

Crochet

A 2-hour private lesson will get you on the road to crocheting.

  • R300 per lesson or R1000 for 4 lessons
  • Requirements: Size 4.00 crochet hook, DK (Double-Knit) wool
